A Heat and Moisture Exchanger (HME), also known as an Artificial Nose, is a medical consumable used for humidifying and filtering respiratory gases, functioning similarly to the human nasal cavity. The Heat and Moisture Exchanger Filter mainly consists of a medical-grade plastic shell, paper-based filter medium, and humidification pad, equipped with standard air inlet and outlet.
By recovering part of the moisture and heat from the patient’s exhaled air and reintroducing them into the respiratory tract during inhalation, the product increases the temperature and humidity of inhaled gases, reduces irritation of the respiratory mucosa caused by dry air, and helps maintain a relatively stable internal airway environment.

This combined-type Artificial Nose adopts a multi-layer filtration and humidification structure design. During exhalation, the humidification material absorbs moisture and heat; during inhalation, dry air enters the airway after being heated and humidified. Meanwhile, the built-in filter layer can trap airborne particles, bacteria, and viruses, improving the cleanliness of respiratory gases.
The outer diameters of the two ends of the product are 25 mm and 22 mm respectively, facilitating connection with common breathing circuits, masks, or related equipment.
The product features a white appearance, available in two specifications: Adult Size and Pediatric Size.
Pediatric Size
Recommended tidal volume: 120–1500 ml
At a flow rate of 30 L/min, both specifications have a breathing resistance of less than 0.3 kPa, with bacteria and virus filtration efficiency higher than 99.99%.
Stable Humidification & Thermal Insulation: Provides necessary humidity and temperature for dry respiratory gases, reducing airway dryness and discomfort.
High-Efficiency Filtration Performance: Multi-layer filter material helps reduce the risk of airborne particles, bacteria, and viruses entering the respiratory tract.
Anti-Reflux Structure Design: Minimizes the reflux of secretions or condensate into the breathing circuit, offering certain protection for equipment and pipelines.
Lightweight & Easy to Use: Compact and lightweight.
The Heat and Moisture Exchanger Filter is mainly used for respiratory gas treatment, with common applications including:
Daily respiratory management of patients with tracheostomy or laryngectomy
Humidification of respiratory gases during mechanical ventilation
Use with CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) / BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) devices as a passive humidification method
Scenarios related to artificial ventilation or respiratory support
In these cases, the product helps compensate for insufficient humidification caused by bypassing the natural nasal cavity function.
Initial use of the HME may cause temporary increased sputum or mucus secretion in some users. This is usually a normal adaptation response and tends to alleviate gradually with prolonged use in most cases.
Regular Replacement
It is recommended to replace the product regularly according to clinical usage conditions, generally once every 24 hours or once a week, to maintain stable performance.
Proper Storage
Unused products should be kept in sealed packaging to prevent premature absorption of moisture from the air.
